BEIJING (Dow Jones)--The number of Internet users in China reached 253 million at the end of June, rising 56% from 162 million at the same time last year, state-owned China Internet Network Information Center said Thursday.

China now has the most Internet users in the world, having overtaken the U.S., it said.

Of China's population of 1.33 billion, 19.1% were internet users at the end of June, up from 12.3% a year earlier, but still slightly lower than the global average of 21.1%, the center said.
