By Yukari Iwatani Kane
TOKYO -- Sony Corp. is releasing a new safari game this week for its PlayStation 3 videogame console that purposely steers clear of attributes found in most popular videogames: It has no shooting, little action, no winning or losing, and not even an ending. Players simply observe wild animals in the savanna and take virtual photos.
But Sony is hoping that the game, called Afrika, will impress players with its advanced graphics. The developers, who spent nearly four years creating the game -- including two visits to Africa -- packed a fictitious national park with photo-realistic zebras, elephants, lions and dozens of other exotic animals.
Afrika, which goes on sale Thursday in Japan for about $54, is an important test for Sony, which is seeking to broaden its videogame sales beyond a core audience of young male players who love action-packed games. The electronics giant is hoping the game could lead to a new genre of nature-exploration games.
"This is a different approach to interactive entertainment, and some people may not see it as a game," said Kazuo Hirai, chief executive of Sony's videogame unit.
There is no doubt that Sony is trying a new approach. Because it costs so much to develop games for today's technically advanced consoles, videogame companies often stick to sequels of popular games or surefire hits along familiar themes.
But whether a different tack will succeed in drawing new players to the PlayStation 3 is unclear. "I prefer games that are a little more challenging and [have] some kind of thinking element rather than just observing," says Jeremy Howard, a 32-year-old in Tokyo.
PlayStation 3 sales recently have accelerated after a slow launch two years ago, but they still lag behind rival Nintendo Co.'s Wii, which has been more successful at capturing casual game players with innovative, easy-to-play games. Mr. Howard, for example, says he mostly plays Nintendo's Mario Kart racing game with his three small children.
As of June 30, Sony has sold 14.4 million PS3s cumulatively world-wide, compared with 29.6 million Nintendo Wiis and more than 20 million Microsoft Corp. Xbox 360s.
Sony officials say they hope to sell at least 100,000 copies -- respectable in an industry where unit sales must be more than 500,000 to be considered a hit. They hope the game will trigger purchases of PS3s by first-time game players. If the game sells well, Afrika could also help persuade independent publishers to develop newer games that take advantage of the PS3's technological capabilities more fully, says Sony. The company declines to say how much it spent to develop the game.
David Cole, an industry analyst with DFC Intelligence, says most PS3 owners are serious game players who could find Afrika too tame. "It has a lot of potential, but a lot of the consumer base that might really like that type of game may be tough to attract," Mr. Cole says.
Another challenge: The PS3 has the ability to render images more realistically than ever before, and developers took extra care with the smallest details like the way muscles ripple when they move. But the digital renderings may not be enough by themselves to impress players, who likely have seen the real thing in zoos or through ubiquitous nature programming on television.
To keep things simple, the game doesn't have features common elsewhere. There is no online capability other than being able to put up a single photograph to share with others. Players also can't customize the character beyond choosing a man or woman, and they never die, though they can faint and get sent back to the base camp if they get too close to dangerous animals.
Nevertheless, some longtime industry observers say the game could draw game players looking for something brand new. "The graphic quality in this one is so high that it could be fun to watch what the zebras are doing all day," says Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Enterbrain Inc., which publishes Japan's foremost videogame magazine.
Afrika is a single-player game. The player takes on the role of a photojournalist, exploring and watching the way animals behave. Players can see cheetahs hunting, a band of hyenas stealing another animal's kill, or other scenarios. "I think there's room for a gorgeous game that can be lazily played," says Katsumoto Tatsukawa, who created the game with just 25 developers, far fewer than the 100 or more developers that would typically be assigned to a high-profile game.

Mr. Obama

SUBMERGED GHANA FOREST MAY POINT TO TIMBER BONANZA

By Alister Doyle, Environment Correspondent

ACCRA, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Logging of a Ghanaian forest submerged 40 years ago by a hydroelectric dam could point to an underwater timber bonanza worth billions of dollars in tropical countries, a senior Ghanaian official said on Monday.

Exploiting submerged rot-resistant hardwoods such as ebony, wawa or odum trees in Lake Volta, the largest man-made lake in Africa, can also slow deforestation on land and curb emissions of greenhouse gases linked to burning of forests.
"Logging will start in October," Robert Bamfo, head of Climate Change at the government's Forestry Commission, told Reuters on the sidelines of a U.N. Aug. 21-27 climate conference in Accra. "This will reduce the pressure on our forests."
"The project aims to harvest 14 million cubic metres (494.4 million cu ft) of timber worth about ê4 billion," he said.
Logging will be led by a privately owned Canadian company, CSR Developments, which says it aims to invest ê100 million in Ghana. Cutting equipment can be mounted on barges, guided by sonars to grab trees below water.
"There are very similar circumstances in numerous countries around the world including Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Brazil, Surinam, Malaysia and others," Bamfo said of forgotten forests swamped by hydroelectric dams.
"The potential is there -- they are awaiting to see the outcome of the Ghana project," he said.
He told the conference there were estimates that there were "5 million hectares (12.36 million acres) of salvageable submerged timber in the hydroelectric reservoirs in the tropics with the potential to supplement global demand for timber."
"The trees are still strong," Bamfo said, even though they had been under water since construction of the Akosombo Dam in the 1960s. Harvesting would cost more than on land but was still commercial because of the value of the timber.

BOAT COLLISIONS
In some shallower parts of the lake, covering an area of 850,000 hectares (2.1 million acres), thousands of trunks jut
several metres out of the water. The lake is 90 metres (300 ft) deep at its deepest with a mean depth of 19 metres.
"Boat collisions with submerged tree stumps cause many fatalities every year," Bamfo said.
In the 1960s, no one saw a need to fell the trees as the lake rose. "Maybe at the time we thought we had enough timber in our forest estates to sustain us. Now, because of the decline, we need to diversify."
Ghana is being deforested at a rate of about 1.9 percent a year.
The U.N. conference is looking at ways to slow deforestation, blamed by U.N. surveys for emitting almost 20 percent of greenhouse gases from human activities. Trees soak up carbon dioxide as they grow and release it when burnt or when they rot.

Worst. President. Ever.

DOONESBURY QUESTA DOMENICA prende ancor più chiaramente posizione. Per Garry B. Trudeua, Bush è veramente il peggio.

Bentornati

In massa.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Antibodies from survivors of the 1918 flu pandemic, the worst in human memory, still protect against the highly deadly virus, researchers reported on Sunday.

The findings by a team of influenza and immune system experts suggest new and better ways to fight viruses -- especially new pandemic strains that emerge and spread before a vaccine can be formulated.

These survivors, now aged 91 to 101, all lived through the pandemic as children.

I soliti malfidati

Fascist state censors Pirate Bay

We're quite used to fascist countries not allowing freedom of speech. A lot of smaller nations that have dictators decide to block our site since we can help spread information that could be harmful to the dictators.

This time it's Italy. They suffer from a really bad background as one of the IFPIs was formed in Italy during the fascist years and now they have a fascist leader in the country, Silvio Berlusconi. Berlusconi is also the most powerful person in Italian media owning a lot of companies that compete with The Pirate Bay and he would like to stay that way - so one of his lackeys, Giancarlo Mancusi, ordered a shutdown of our domain name and IP in Italy to make it hard to not support Berlusconis empire.

We have had fights previously in Italy, recently with our successful art installation where we had to storm Fortezza in order to get our art done. And as usual, we won. We will also win this time.

We have already changed IP for the website - that makes it work for half the ISPs again. And we want you all to inform your italian friends to switch their DNS to OpenDNS so they can bypass their ISPs filters. This will also let them bypass the other filters installed by the Italian government, as a bonus. And for the meanwhile - http://labaia.org works (La Baia means The Bay in Italian).

And please, everybody should also contact their ISP and tell them that this is not OK and that the ISPs should appeal. We don't want a censored internet! And the war starts here...

Money Quote: The blue box opened, and so far, the sky hasn’t fallen.

Money Quote: Retailers are typically obsessed with what to put under their roofs, not on them. Yet the nation’s biggest store chains are coming to see their immense, flat roofs as an untapped resource.

Money Quote: "This is a winery run by women," said Marilena. "It must be clean!"

Clean indeed. Everything from bariques to bottles is in perfect order. Even the drain coverings sparkle. This is indicative of this small operation that is producing Inzolia white wine and a noted Nero d'Avola, both local grapes.

Sign of the Times

Pericolosi sovversivi

ECCO CHI SONO quelli che cercano di minare l'ordine prestabilito, i pericolosi sovversivi.

Money quote: As the Summer Olympics approach, self-righteous pundits from the West have concocted a false image of a rising, military empire from the East bent on world domination.

Yet nothing could be farther from the truth.

While the rhetoric and actions of Chairman Mao certainly held such ambitions, many of the reforms of Deng Xiaoping are nothing short of liberalism in its purist sense.

First and foremost, he slashed the 4.5 million-men military by more than half and reinstituted civilian control over it.

Contrast this trend to verbiage extolled by Bush, Obama and McCain. Not only do they not talk of dismantling the Imperial legions; they all want to increase the size of the military. Dare we even discuss Congressional oversight over military activities, or lack thereof?

The collider is currently undergoing commissioning while being cooled down to its final operating temperature of approximately 1.9 K (−271.25 °C). The first particle beams are due for injection in August 2008, with the first collisions planned to take place two to three months later.

When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and "missing links" in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass. The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would be a significant step in the search for a Grand Unified Theory, which seeks to unify three of the four known fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force, leaving out only gravity. The Higgs boson may also help to explain why gravitation is so weak compared to the other three forces. In addition to the Higgs boson, other theorized novel particles that might be produced, and for which searches are planned, include strangelets, micro black holes, magnetic monopoles and supersymmetric particles.
